What this is
PP/AWG is a literary alternate-history novel spanning 1980–2080, premised on a single fork in the road: Barry Commoner wins the 1980 U.S. presidential election. From that divergence, the novel traces a century of consequence across three generations — Promethean, Sisyphean, Pandoran — culminating in a First Contact / consciousness projection event and a 2080 epilogue. It is novel one in the AWG series; A World Game: Critical Path (CP) is novel two, developing in parallel.
The novel operates across four nested levels simultaneously: the Witness (an AI narrator outside linear time), the PP alternate timeline, Cosmo Aquarian (a character within PP writing his own novel), and RAV Johnson (a character within Cosmo’s novel writing From Nero to Neo — which is also Brian’s real philosophical work, ntn). This recursive architecture is load-bearing and has never been violated in prose.
What PP/AWG actually spawned
PP/AWG is the generative origin of the entire mmh ecosystem — not metaphorically, but causally. The sequence: The novel’s complexity (40+ chapters, multi-generational ensemble, philosophically dense, 100-year timeline) created an immediate memory problem: how do you keep it coherent across sessions when Claude retains nothing between chats? That problem forced the construction of a story bible — 35+ character files, master timeline, locations, philosophy, and literary reference registers — generated via Claude Code extraction of 26 Ulysses files and reconciled across multiple sessions into a live Airtable relational database.
The story bible was the first serious encounter with KB architecture, structured Claude collaboration, and protocol-driven workflow. It proved that complex knowledge could be made navigable across sessions if the right infrastructure existed. That proof-of-concept became the template for everything that followed: ccapi (the coordination and code layer), ukbtp (the protocol methodology), the kumu/Airtable pipeline, and eventually the full mmh ecosystem of interconnected projects.
The MMH Blog existed before any of this began. Everything else — toi, whmi, sgbh, edl, wwz, the Quartz wiki, the Pre/Post-Quartz pipeline — emerged after PP made the methodology legible.
The irony worth naming
The novel itself is still in active revision (R5 scaffolds complete, R6 underway). But what PP generated — a methodology for AI-assisted complex knowledge work — may be the more significant near-term artifact. The process of building that scaffolding taught Brian how to think in protocols, structure KBs, and leverage Claude as a genuine structural collaborator rather than a text generator. That learning transferred to every project in the ecosystem.
The story bible remains the most complex single artifact in the mmh ecosystem — rivaling, and arguably exceeding, all others in relational density.
